In Africa, women like Queen Nzinga and Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti made history in politics,
challenging colonial powers. Musicians like Miriam Makeba and Oumou Sangaré used their voices to fight for freedom and women’s rights.
Recognizing the vital role that women play in all aspects of society, the U.S. government supports initiatives promoting education, economic opportunities, and healthcare for women in partnership with local organizations. This includes programs like The U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) DREAMS program. This program provides girls with comprehensive life skills education, economic opportunities, and access to health services. Since its launch in 2014, DREAMS has reached over 10 million girls in 15 countries across sub-Saharan Africa.
