  • Former Soldier Ruth Ogunleye Reportedly Arrested After Accusing Senior Military Officers Of S*xual Harassment

  •

The woman who once took her sexual harassment complaints against senior Nigerian military officers into the public domain is now at the centre of a new development that has raised questions about her legal situation.

Ruth Ogunleye, a former soldier who accused a senior officer of making unwanted sexual advances towards her and claimed that top military authorities ignored her pleas for intervention, has reportedly been arrested and transferred into custody.

According to a source familiar with the matter, Ogunleye was moved from Lagos to a correctional facility, with Kaduna State mentioned in the initial account. However, another part of the report referred to Abuja as her destination, leaving uncertainty over where she is currently being detained.

The source further claimed that the arrest was ordered by Nigeria's Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (retd.), and that Ogunleye was awaiting trial.

As of the time of the report, however, the specific offence for which she was arrested had not been disclosed. There was also no clear explanation of the circumstances leading to her detention or confirmation of the precise location where she is being held.

These unanswered questions have brought renewed attention to a case that previously placed the former soldier in the spotlight over her claims of sexual harassment and the military's handling of her complaints.

How Ogunleye's Allegations Against Senior Officers Began

Ogunleye first attracted widespread attention in January 2024, when she publicly accused Colonel I.B. Abdulkareem, Colonel G.S. Ogor and Brigadier General I.B. Solebo of intimidation and other forms of maltreatment.

She maintained that her problems began after she rejected what she described as unwanted sexual advances. According to her account, the situation left her seeking protection and assistance from senior officers within the military hierarchy.

But beyond the officer she directly accused of sexual harassment, Ogunleye also questioned the response of those she approached for help.

She claimed that her attempts to obtain justice through the military system did not produce the intervention she expected, despite taking her complaints to officers occupying positions of considerable authority.

One of the senior figures she named was General Christopher Musa, who was serving as Chief of Defence Staff at the time and has since become Nigeria's Minister of Defence.

Her Appeal To The Then Chief Of Defence Staff

In September 2024, Ogunleye spoke about her experience in an interview monitored by SaharaReporters.

During the interview, she said she had brought the matter to Musa's attention and had also approached several other senior military officers in the hope that they would intervene.

She expressed frustration that her efforts to obtain a hearing had not yielded meaningful assistance. In her account, the accused officer's seniority within the military structure contributed to the difficulty she faced in pursuing her complaint.

Ogunleye also maintained that she had attempted to follow the procedures available to service personnel seeking redress.

She specifically referred to Section 179 of the Armed Forces Act, arguing that her efforts to use the military's established channels had not resulted in what she considered an adequate response.

Her allegations therefore went beyond the conduct of an individual officer. She questioned whether the military's internal system had provided her with a fair opportunity to present her case and obtain protection.

However, the claims remained contested, and the Nigerian Army would later announce the outcome of its own investigation.

What The Nigerian Army Said After Investigating The Case

Following the public controversy, the Nigerian Army investigated Ogunleye's accusations against Colonel Abdulkareem.

The Army subsequently stated that its investigation had found no evidence to substantiate the sexual harassment claims against the colonel.

Military authorities also maintained that Ogunleye's discharge from service was based on medical grounds, following medical assessments.

That position differed from Ogunleye's account of the events surrounding her military career and her attempts to obtain redress.

In October 2024, she called for a review of the investigation, expressing concern that the findings might have been interfered with.

She indicated that she suspected the investigation's outcome could have been tampered with, although that suspicion was not, in itself, proof that any official had manipulated the findings.

Ogunleye also spoke about the personal consequences of the controversy, including the stigma associated with the allegations and the possible damage to her reputation.

Her appeal brought the dispute back into public discussion, with the central questions surrounding her original complaints and the military's response still attracting attention.

Why Her Reported Arrest Is Raising Questions

The latest report introduces another development, but it does not yet establish how Ogunleye's reported detention relates to the earlier dispute.

The source cited in the report claimed that Musa ordered her arrest. However, no supporting official statement or publicly identified legal document was provided to establish the circumstances of that instruction.

More importantly, the report did not identify the specific charges she may be facing, the court handling the matter or the date she is expected to appear before a judge.

The conflicting references to Kaduna and Abuja have also left her reported place of detention uncertain.

Without clarification from the relevant authorities, it would be premature to conclude that the arrest was punishment for her earlier accusations against senior military officers. There is currently insufficient information in the report to establish whether the two matters are connected or whether her detention concerns a separate issue.

The distinction is important because the earlier sexual harassment allegations, the Army's investigation findings and the circumstances of the reported arrest are separate matters that require their own evidence.

    Nigerian Army Contacted For Clarification

SaharaReporters said it contacted the Nigerian Army's spokesperson, Colonel Appolonia Anele, to obtain further details about Ogunleye's reported arrest.

The publication sought clarification on the circumstances surrounding the development, her current legal status and the authorities responsible for her transfer.

However, according to the report, Anele did not answer the calls placed to her telephone, nor did she respond to a message sent to her.

Consequently, the report did not contain an official military explanation of the arrest or confirmation of the allegations surrounding it.

For now, several important questions remain unanswered: What offence is Ogunleye accused of committing? Where exactly is she being held? Has she been formally charged before a court? And is there any established connection between her detention and the complaints she previously made against senior military officers?

Until the Nigerian Army or another relevant authority provides further information, those questions remain unresolved.

What is clear is that Ogunleye's case has taken another turn, bringing renewed attention to her earlier allegations, the military's response to them and the circumstances surrounding her reported detention. The next official statement or court record may provide the answers needed to establish what has happened and what comes next.
