  • Factors Influencing Career Choice Among Higher Education Students in Onitsha North Local Government Area of Anambra State By DR OKECHUKWU CHIDOLUO VITUS

  • Abstract

Career choice is a complex decision influenced by various factors, particularly among higher education students. This research paper explores the myriad of factors that influence career choices among students in the Onitsha North Local Government Area of Anambra State, Nigeria. It utilizes a quantitative approach to gather data from students attending selected higher education institutions within the area. Key factors examined include personal interests, family influence, cultural aspects, economic considerations, and academic performance. The findings reveal that while personal interests and family influence are significant predictors of career choice, economic factors and cultural perceptions also play a crucial role.

    Introduction

Career choice is a significant decision-making process that can shape an individual's professional life and overall satisfaction. Understanding the factors that influence this process is essential, particularly in a rapidly changing economic and educational landscape. In Onitsha North Local Government Area, a vibrant commercial hub in southeastern Nigeria, young individuals face unique challenges and opportunities in making career choices. This paper aims to identify and analyze the factors influencing career choice among higher education students in this region.

    Literature Review

Previous research has identified several factors influencing career choice among students. According to Super's (1990) career development theory, individuals' self-concept and aspirations evolve as they progress through different life stages, influencing career decisions. A study by Khairullah et al. (2018) emphasizes the role of family in shaping career choices, highlighting that parental guidance can significantly impact students’ professional aspirations. Similarly, Gati and Asher (2001) noted that economic considerations, including job availability and salary expectations, often weigh heavily in students' decision-making processes.

    Methodology

This study employed a quantitative research design utilizing a structured questionnaire. A sample of 250 students from various higher education institutions in Onitsha North was selected through stratified random sampling to ensure representation across different fields of study. The questionnaire comprised items assessing personal interests, family influence, cultural perceptions, economic factors, and academic performance. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and regression analysis to determine the relationship between the identified factors and career choice.

    Results

The results indicated that personal interests (mean = 4.56, SD = 0.78) and family influence (mean = 4.34, SD = 0.85) scored highest among the factors affecting career choice, indicating that students perceive their preferences and family expectations as critical in their decision-making process. Economic considerations (mean = 4.12, SD = 0.91) also emerged as a crucial factor, particularly in the context of current employment trends and job scarcity in Nigeria. Furthermore, cultural factors, while significant (mean = 3.89, SD = 0.93), were less influential compared to personal and familial factors.

    Discussion

The findings align with existing literature that underscores the importance of personal interests and family guidance in career choice (Khairullah et al., 2018; Super, 1990). The emphasis on economic factors highlights the realities faced by students in Nigeria, where job security and financial stability are paramount in career considerations. Cultural influences, though significant, tend to be secondary to personal and familial factors, suggesting a shift in values among the youth in Onitsha North.

    Conclusion

This study emphasizes the multifaceted nature of career choice among higher education students in Onitsha North Local Government Area. Personal interests and family influence remain paramount, while economic factors provide a pragmatic lens through which students evaluate their career options. Understanding these dynamics is essential for educators, policymakers, and career counselors aiming to assist students in making informed career choices. Future research should explore the long-term impacts of these factors on career satisfaction and success.
