    Abstract

The selection of a career path is a significant decision for secondary school students, influenced by numerous factors. This research paper aims to investigate the various elements that shape career choices among students in Onitsha North Local Government Area of Anambra State, Nigeria. Utilizing a survey methodology involving questionnaires distributed to students, this study analyzes demographic factors, parental influence, educational background, peer influence, and socio-economic status. Findings indicate a strong correlation between these factors and students' career decisions, highlighting the need for targeted career counseling services in schools.

    Introduction

Career choice is a pivotal juncture in an individual’s life, particularly during the formative years of secondary education. This period is marked by a multitude of influences that can either facilitate or hinder students’ ability to make informed career decisions. Understanding these influences is crucial for educators, counselors, and policymakers to provide adequate support for students. This study focuses on exploring the factors that influence career choice among secondary school students in Onitsha North Local Government Area of Anambra State.

    Aim of the Study

The primary aim of this research is to identify and analyze the factors affecting career choices of secondary school students in Onitsha North and to propose recommendations for improving the career decision-making process.

    Literature Review

    The Importance of Career Choice

The decision-making process concerning career choice is vital, as it can determine an individual's professional fulfillment and economic stability (Super, 1990). As noted by Holland (1997), career choice is influenced by an individual's personality and the environments in which they find themselves.

    Factors Influencing Career Choices

Parental Influence Parental expectations and guidance play a significant role in shaping students' career paths. Research suggests that parents who are involved in their children's education significantly impact their children's career choices (Schuh, 2019).

Peer Influence Peers often serve as a primary source of information and modeling for career choices. Studies indicate that students tend to gravitate toward careers that are endorsed or pursued by their friends (Brown, 2002).

Educational Background The accessibility and quality of education influence career choices. Those exposed to certain subjects or career guidance tend to develop specific interests (Maree, 2016).

Socio-Economic Status A family's socio-economic status can impact students' awareness of career opportunities and their ability to access resources necessary for certain professions (Eagly & Carli, 2007).

    Methodology

    Research Design

This study employed a descriptive research design, utilizing a quantitative approach through survey questionnaires.

    Participants

The participants included 200 secondary school students from various schools within Onitsha North Local Government Area. Stratified random sampling was used to ensure representation from different socio-economic backgrounds.

    Data Collection

Data were collected via a structured questionnaire that assessed demographic information and various influencing factors in career choice. The questionnaire consisted of both closed and open-ended questions.

    Data Analysis

The data were analyzed using statistical tools, with descriptive statistics providing insight into the prevalence of different influencing factors.

    Findings

    Demographics

The sample comprised 112 males (56%) and 88 females (44%), with ages ranging from 13 to 18 years.

    Key Influencing Factors

Parental Influence 68% of students reported that their parents played a significant role in their career decision-making process.

Peer Influence 52% indicated that their friends' choices impacted their career decisions.

Educational Background 75% stated that subjects they enjoyed in school informed their career interests.

Socio-Economic Status 60% of students acknowledged that their family’s financial capacity influenced their career prospects.

    Discussion

The findings corroborate existing literature emphasizing the importance of parental influence and education's role in shaping students' career choices. The significant peer impact is particularly pertinent in the context of adolescents, who often rely on the approval of their contemporaries. The socio-economic status of families remains a prevalent barrier, affecting not only access to certain educational opportunities but also the aspirational framework of students.

    Conclusion

This study underscores the multifaceted nature of career choice among secondary school students in Onitsha North, revealing critical influences including parental guidance, peer relationships, educational experiences, and socio-economic factors. Future initiatives could focus on enhancing career counseling services and parental involvement in schools to foster informed career aspirations among students.

    Recommendations

Implement structured career counseling programs in secondary schools.

Foster parental engagement through workshops aimed at guiding career discussions.

Increase awareness programs about various career opportunities beyond traditional professions.
