He later went on to establish other successful companies such as Next Foods, Next Pharmaceuticals, and Next Oil and Gas.

One of the key factors that contributed to Obi's success in the business world is his ability to identify and invest in profitable ventures. He has a keen eye for business opportunities and is not afraid to take risks. This has led him to invest in various sectors such as banking, real estate, and hospitality.

In 2003, Obi made a foray into politics when he was elected as the Governor of Anambra State. During his tenure, he implemented various policies and programs that brought significant development to the state. He focused on improving the education sector, healthcare, and infrastructure, which earned him the nickname 'Okwute,' which means 'Rock' in Igbo language.

Obi's business acumen was also evident during his time as Governor, where he was able to increase the state's internally generated revenue (IGR) from ₦300 million to ₦10 billion in just four years. He also reduced the state's debt from ₦127 billion to ₦9 billion, making Anambra the least indebted state in Nigeria at the time.

After completing his term as Governor, Obi continued to make an impact in the business world. He served as the Chairman of the Board of Directors for several companies, including Fidelity Bank Plc, Diamond Bank Plc, and Guardian Express Mortgage Bank Ltd. He also became a member of the Board of Directors for the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the National Economic Council.
