Sad.
The world lost an amazing woman today. I learned just now that Maya Angelou died today
. She was 86 and most definitely lived a full life. The first time I heard her speak was at President Clinton's inauguration. I came across her again in college and studied her many works, did essays, and other literary college assignments on her. I was inspired. It was amazing to hear her speak again at President Obama's inauguration's as well.
Among her life accomplishments were her published books of poetry, and is credited with a list of plays, movies, and television shows spanning more than fifty years. She received dozens of awards, over thirty honorary doctoral degrees, and was honored by literary organizations, government agencies, and special interest groups. Her honors included a Pulitzer Prize nomination for one of her books of poetry, a Tony Award nomination and three Grammys for her spoken word albums. She served on two presidential committees, and was awarded the National Medal of Arts in 2000, the Lincoln Medal in 2008, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2011. My regret is that I never got the opportunity to meet, or hear her speak in person.
