  •

The Public Sector Health Alliance Nigeria (PSHAN) is an organization that has been working towards improving the health sector in Nigeria since its establishment in 2005. PSHAN is a partnership between the Federal Ministry of Health, state governments, and development partners with the aim of achieving universal health coverage and addressing the challenges faced by the public health system in Nigeria.

The idea of PSHAN was first conceived in 2003 when the government of Nigeria recognized the need for a collaboration between the public and private sectors to address the country's health challenges. The Federal Ministry of Health, in partnership with the World Bank and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), conducted a study to assess the potential for a public-private partnership in the health sector. The study revealed that such a partnership could be effective in improving the health outcomes of Nigerians.

In 2005, the Public Sector Health Alliance Nigeria was officially launched by the then President of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo, with the aim of improving the access, quality, and utilization of health services for all Nigerians. The alliance was set up to promote collaboration and coordination between the public and private sectors in the health sector, with a focus on achieving universal health coverage.

The establishment of PSHAN was a significant step towards addressing the challenges in the Nigerian public health system. Nigeria, being the most populous country in Africa, faces a high burden of disease, including malaria, HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and maternal and child mortality. The public health system in the country has been struggling to meet the growing demand for healthcare services, leading to poor health outcomes for its citizens. The formation of PSHAN aimed to address these issues by leveraging the strengths of both the public and private sectors.

Since its inception, PSHAN has been working tirelessly to achieve its goals. The alliance has been involved in various initiatives, including the development of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) and the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) policy for the health sector. PSHAN has also been actively involved in the procurement of essential drugs and medical supplies, capacity building for healthcare workers, and the renovation of health facilities in different parts of the country.

One of the significant achievements of PSHAN is the establishment of the National Health Insurance Scheme, which aims to provide affordable and accessible healthcare to all Nigerians. Through this scheme, PSHAN has been able to improve the access and utilization of healthcare services, especially for low-income families. The alliance has also been successful in increasing the number of private sector providers participating in the NHIS, which has led to a more robust and efficient health system.

Furthermore, PSHAN has been instrumental in improving the quality of healthcare services in the country. Through its capacity building initiatives, the alliance has trained over 600 healthcare workers in various areas, including emergency obstetric care, family planning, and disease management. This has led to an improvement in the skills and knowledge of healthcare workers, resulting in better health outcomes for patients.

The alliance has also been working towards strengthening the health infrastructure in the country. PSHAN has renovated over 200 primary healthcare facilities in different parts of Nigeria, providing essential equipment and supplies to these facilities. This has not only improved the quality of care provided but also increased the number of people accessing healthcare services.

In conclusion, the establishment of the Public Sector Health Alliance Nigeria has been a game-changer in the Nigerian health sector. The alliance has been successful in promoting collaboration between the public and private sectors, resulting in significant improvements in the country's health system. With its continued efforts and initiatives, PSHAN is playing a crucial role in achieving universal health coverage and improving the health outcomes of Nigerians.
