PARK -
Coronation Park, also known as the Coronation Ground, is a historic site located in Delhi, India. It is spread over an area of 60 acres and is situated in the heart of the city, near the famous Red Fort. The park holds great significance in the history of India, as it was the venue for the grand Durbar of 1877 and 1903, where the British monarchs were proclaimed as the Emperor and Empress of India.
The story of Coronation Park dates back to the British colonial era in India. In 1876, Queen Victoria was proclaimed as the Empress of India and to celebrate this event, the British government decided to hold a grand Durbar in Delhi, the then capital of India. The Durbar was a grand gathering of Indian rulers and chiefs, along with British officials and soldiers. It was a display of the British power and supremacy in India.
To host this grand event, a vast stretch of land was selected in the outskirts of the city, which was then known as the ‘Coronation Ground’. The ground was chosen due to its strategic location and was close to the Red Fort, which was the residence of the Mughal Emperors. The ground was also spacious enough to accommodate the large number of attendees.
The first Durbar was held in 1877 and was attended by around 70,000 people. The event was a grand success and was followed by another Durbar in 1903, which was attended by around 250,000 people. The Durbar was a major event in the history of India and was attended by many prominent personalities, including the then Viceroy of India, Lord Curzon, and the Maharajas of different princely states.
After the independence of India in 1947, the Coronation Park became a symbol of the colonial past and the new government decided to preserve this historic site. The park was renamed as the Coronation Park and it became a popular spot for picnics and leisure activities for the locals. However, over the years, the park lost its charm and was neglected by the authorities.
In 2010, the Delhi government took an initiative to revive the glory of the Coronation Park. The park was renovated and many of the structures, including the grand pavilion, were restored to their original form. The park was opened to the public in 2013 and since then, it has become a popular tourist attraction, especially for history enthusiasts.
Today, the Coronation Park stands as a reminder of our colonial past and the struggle for independence. It is a place where one can witness the grandeur and opulence of the British rule in India. The park also holds a special place in the hearts of the locals, who come here to relax and spend quality time with their loved ones.
The Coronation Park is not just a historic site, but it is also a symbol of unity and diversity. It is a place where people from different backgrounds and cultures come together to celebrate the rich heritage of our country. The park also serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by our freedom fighters and their struggle for a free and independent nation.
In conclusion, the establishment of Coronation Park is a significant event in the history of India. It is a place that reflects the glorious past of our country and serves as a reminder of our journey towards independence. The park continues to attract visitors from all over the world and will always hold a special place in the hearts of the people of India.
