  • THE ESTABLISHMENT STORY OF AIRTEL
  •

Airtel, one of the leading telecommunication companies in India, has been a household name for over two decades now. From its humble beginnings as a small company in Delhi, Airtel has emerged as a telecommunications giant with a presence in 18 countries across Asia and Africa.

The story of Airtel dates back to 1995 when Sunil Bharti Mittal, a young entrepreneur from Ludhiana, started a small telecommunication company called Bharti Tele-Ventures Limited. At that time, India had just opened its doors for private players in the telecom sector, and Airtel was one of the first companies to receive a license to operate in the country.

Initially, Airtel faced tough competition from the state-owned telecom company, BSNL. However, with its innovative and customer-centric approach, Airtel soon gained a loyal customer base and started expanding its services to other regions of the country. The company's first major breakthrough came in 2002 when it launched its mobile services in Delhi, which was followed by Mumbai in 2003.

In 2004, Airtel became the first telecom company in India to offer national roaming services, enabling its customers to use their mobile phones across the country without any additional charges. This move was a game-changer for Airtel and helped the company to gain an edge over its competitors.

With its focus on providing quality services and affordable tariffs, Airtel continued to grow rapidly and became the first Indian telecom company to cross the 100 million customer mark in 2009. This achievement solidified Airtel's position as the market leader in the telecommunication sector.

In the same year, Airtel also made its foray into the international market by acquiring Zain's mobile operations in 15 African countries. This move marked Airtel's first step towards becoming a global telecommunications company.

In the following years, Airtel ventured into various other services, including broadband, Direct-to-Home (DTH), and mobile money services. The company also expanded its reach to other countries, including Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and various African nations.

In 2012, Airtel made history by launching the first 4G services in India. This move not only revolutionized the Indian telecom sector but also put Airtel ahead of its competitors in terms of technology and innovation.

Over the years, Airtel has continued to expand its services and diversify its offerings. The company also went through a major rebranding in 2010, changing its logo and tagline to 'Express Yourself.' This move was in line with Airtel's vision to empower its customers to connect and communicate freely.

Today, Airtel is a household name in India and has a customer base of over 444 million spread across various countries. The company has also received numerous accolades for its services, including being named as India's Most Valuable Brand by BrandZ in 2020.

With its remarkable journey from a small company in Delhi to a global telecommunications giant, Airtel's establishment story is a true testament to the power of determination, innovation, and customer focus. As Airtel continues to expand its services and offerings, it is safe to say that the company will continue to be a dominant player in the telecom industry for years to come.
