    Herbert Wigwe was born on the 9th of August, 1966, in Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria. He grew up in a Christian home and attended the prestigious King’s College, Lagos for his secondary education. After completing his secondary education, he proceeded to the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, where he obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting. He also holds a Master’s degree in Banking and Finance from the University of Lagos.


    Career in Banking

    Wigwe’s career in the banking industry began in 1989 when he joined Guaranty Trust Bank as a pioneer staff. He worked in various departments and rose through the ranks to become an Executive Director in 2002. In 2005, he joined Access Bank as Deputy Managing Director and was appointed as the Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer in 2014. Under Wigwe’s leadership, Access Bank has experienced tremendous growth and expansion, becoming one of the top five largest banks in Nigeria.

Access Bank launched a N50 billion COVID-19 intervention fund to provide financial support to individuals and businesses, and also donated medical supplies and equipment to health centers and isolation centers across the country.
